The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 8

1

And the LORD spake4 unto Moses, Go3 unto Pharaoh, and say1 unto him, Thus saith1 the LORD, Let my people go,16 that they may serve4 me.

2

And if thou refuse to let [them] go,15 behold, I will smite6 all thy borders with frogs:

3

And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly,1 which shall go up1 and come1 into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, 4904 and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:

4

And the frogs shall come up4 both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.

5

And the LORD spake4 unto Moses, Say3 unto Aaron, Stretch forth3 thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up54 upon the land of Egypt.

6

And Aaron stretched out4 his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up,4 and covered17 the land of Egypt.

7

And the magicians did4 so with their enchantments, and brought up55 frogs upon the land of Egypt.

8

Then Pharaoh called4 for Moses and Aaron, and said,4 Intreat54 the LORD, that he may take away55 the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go,17 that they may do sacrifice4 unto the LORD.

9

And Moses said4 unto Pharaoh, Glory100 over me: when shall I intreat55 for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy53 the frogs from thee and thy houses, [that] they may remain11 in the river only?

10

And he said,4 To morrow. And he said,4 [Be it] according to thy word: that thou mayest know4 that [there is] none like unto the LORD our God.

11

And the frogs shall depart1 from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain11 in the river only.

12

And Moses and Aaron went out4 from Pharaoh: and Moses cried4 unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought1 against Pharaoh.

13

And the LORD did4 according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died4 out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

14

And they gathered them together4 upon heaps: and the land stank.4

15

But when Pharaoh saw4 that there was respite, he hardened53 his heart, and hearkened1 not unto them; as the LORD had said.14

16

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Say3 unto Aaron, Stretch out3 thy rod, and smite54 the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

17

And they did4 so; for Aaron stretched out4 his hand with his rod, and smote55 the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

18

And the magicians did4 so with their enchantments to bring forth53 lice, but they could1 not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.

19

Then the magicians said4 unto Pharaoh, This [is] the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened,4 and he hearkened1 not unto them; as the LORD had said.14

20

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Rise up early54 in the morning, and stand100 before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth6 to the water; and say1 unto him, Thus saith1 the LORD, Let my people go,16 that they may serve4 me.

21

Else, if thou wilt not let my people go,18 behold, I will send56 swarms [of flies] upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full1 of swarms [of flies], and also the ground whereon they [are].

22

And I will sever52 in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell,6 that no swarms [of flies] shall be2 there; to the end thou mayest know4 that I [am] the LORD in the midst of the earth.

23

And I will put1 a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

24

And the LORD did4 so; and there came4 a grievous swarm [of flies] into the house of Pharaoh, and [into] his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted11 by reason of the swarm [of flies].

25

And Pharaoh called4 for Moses and for Aaron, and said,4 Go3 ye, sacrifice3 to your God in the land.

26

And Moses said,4 It is not meet12 so to do;2 for we shall sacrifice4 the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice4 the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone4 us?

27

We will go4 three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice1 to the LORD our God, as he shall command4 us.

28

And Pharaoh said,4 I will let you go,17 that ye may sacrifice1 to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go2 very53 far away:55 intreat54 for me.

29

And Moses said,4 Behold, I go out6 from thee, and I will intreat52 the LORD that the swarms [of flies] may depart1 from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully15 any more55 in not letting the people go15 to sacrifice2 to the LORD.

30

And Moses went out4 from Pharaoh, and intreated4 the LORD.

31

And the LORD did4 according to the word of Moses; and he removed55 the swarms [of flies] from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained8 not one.

32

And Pharaoh hardened55 his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.14
