The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 30

1

Woe to the rebellious6 children, saith7 the LORD, that take2 counsel, but not of me; and that cover2 with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add2 sin to sin:

2

That walk6 to go down2 into Egypt, and have not asked1 at my mouth; to strengthen2 themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust2 in the shadow of Egypt!

3

Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt [your] confusion.

4

For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came55 to Hanes.

5

They were all ashamed52 of a people [that] could not profit55 them, nor be an help nor profit,53 but a shame, and also a reproach.

6

The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence [come] the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying35 serpent, they will carry4 their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people [that] shall not profit55 [them].

7

For the Egyptians shall help4 in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried1 concerning this, Their strength 7294 [is] to sit still.

8

Now go,3 write3 it before them in a table, and note3 it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:

9

That this [is] a rebellious people, lying children, children [that] will1 not hear2 the law of the LORD:

10

Which say1 to the seers,6 See4 not; and to the prophets, Prophesy4 not unto us right things, speak16 unto us smooth things, prophesy3 deceits:

11

Get3 you out of the way, turn aside54 out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease54 from before us.

12

Wherefore thus saith1 the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise2 this word, and trust4 in oppression and perverseness,12 and stay11 thereon:

13

Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall,6 swelling out12 in a high12 wall, whose breaking cometh4 suddenly at an instant.

14

And he shall break1 it as the breaking of the potters'6 vessel that is broken in pieces;2 he shall not spare:4 so that there shall not be found11 in the bursting of it a sherd to take2 fire from the hearth,7 or to take2 water [withal] out of the pit.

15

For thus saith1 the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved;11 in quietness53 and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would1 not.

16

But ye said,4 No; for we will flee4 upon horses; therefore shall ye flee:4 and, We will ride4 upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue6 you be swift.11

17

One thousand [shall flee] at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee:4 till ye be left8 as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.

18

And therefore will the LORD wait,17 that he may be gracious2 unto you, and therefore will he be exalted,4 that he may have mercy15 upon you: for the LORD [is] a God of judgment: blessed [are] all they that wait6 for him.

19

For the people shall dwell4 in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep4 no more:2 he will be very2 gracious4 unto thee at the voice of thy cry;2 when he shall hear2 it, he will answer1 thee.

20

And [though] the Lord give1 you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers56 be removed into a corner11 any more, but thine eyes shall see6 thy teachers:56

21

And thine ears shall hear4 a word behind thee, saying,2 This [is] the way, walk ye3 in it, when ye turn to the right55 hand, and when ye turn to the left.55

22

Ye shall defile14 also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away4 as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say4 unto it, Get thee hence.3

23

Then shall he give1 the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow4 the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed4 in large12 pastures.

24

The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear6 the ground shall eat4 clean provender, which hath been winnowed6 with the shovel and with the fan.

25

And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high12 hill, rivers [and] streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.2

26

Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up2 the breach of his people, and healeth4 the stroke of their wound.

27

Behold, the name of the LORD cometh1 from far, burning6 [with] his anger, and the burden [thereof is] heavy: his lips are full1 of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring6 fire:

28

And his breath, as an overflowing6 stream, shall reach to the midst4 of the neck, to sift53 the nations with the sieve of vanity: and [there shall be] a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing [them] to err.56

29

Ye shall have a song, as in the night [when] a holy solemnity is kept;99 and gladness of heart, as when one goeth6 with a pipe to come2 into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.

30

And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard,52 and shall shew55 the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of [his] anger, and [with] the flame of a devouring6 fire, [with] scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. 1259

31

For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down,11 [which] smote55 with a rod.

32

And [in] every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay55 upon him, [it] shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight8 with it.

33

For Tophet [is] ordained7 of old; yea, for the king it is prepared;90 he hath made [it] deep52 [and] large:52 the pile thereof [is] fire and much53 wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle6 it.
