The Proverbs

Chapter 22

1

A [good] name [is] rather to be chosen12 than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2

The rich and poor6 meet8 together: the LORD [is] the maker6 of them all.

3

A prudent [man] foreseeth1 the evil, and hideth8 5641 4 himself: but the simple pass on,1 and are punished.8

4

By humility [and] the fear of the LORD [are] riches, and honour, and life.

5

Thorns [and] snares [are] in the way of the froward: he that doth keep6 his soul shall be far4 from them.

6

Train up3 a child in the way he should go: and when he is old,55 he will not depart4 from it.

7

The rich ruleth4 over the poor,6 and the borrower5 [is] servant to the lender.56

8

He that soweth6 iniquity shall reap4 vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.4

9

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed;29 for he giveth1 of his bread to the poor.

10

Cast out15 the scorner,5 and contention shall go out;4 yea, strife and reproach shall cease.4

11

He that loveth6 pureness 2889 of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king [shall be] his friend.

12

The eyes of the LORD preserve1 knowledge, and he overthroweth17 the words of the transgressor.6

13

The slothful [man] saith,1 [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain11 in the streets.

14

The mouth of strange women5 [is] a deep pit: he that is abhorred7 of the LORD shall fall4 therein.

15

Foolishness [is] bound7 in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far55 from him.

16

He that oppresseth6 the poor to increase53 his [riches, and] he that giveth6 to the rich, [shall] surely [come] to want.

17

Bow down54 thine ear, and hear3 the words of the wise, and apply4 thine heart unto my knowledge.

18

For [it is] a pleasant thing if thou keep4 them within thee; they shall withal be fitted11 in thy lips.

19

That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known52 to thee this day, even to thee.

20

Have not I written1 to thee excellent things 8032 in counsels and knowledge,

21

That I might make thee know53 the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer53 the words of truth to them that send6 unto thee?

22

Rob4 not the poor, because he [is] poor: neither oppress17 the afflicted in the gate:

23

For the LORD will plead4 their cause, and spoil1 the soul of those that spoiled6 them.

24

Make no friendship101 with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:4

25

Lest thou learn4 his ways, and get1 a snare to thy soul.

26

Be not thou [one] of them that strike6 hands, [or] of them that are sureties6 for debts.

27

If thou hast nothing to pay,15 why should he take away4 thy bed from under thee?

28

Remove55 not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.1

29

Seest1 thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand101 before kings; he shall not stand101 before mean [men].
