Chapter 38

A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.
⁵³ O LORD, rebuke⁵⁵ me not in thy wrath: neither chasten¹⁷ me in thy hot displeasure.

For thine arrows stick fast⁸ in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.⁴

[There is] no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither [is there any] rest in my bones because of my sin.

For mine iniquities are gone over¹ mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy⁴ for me.

My wounds stink⁵² [and] are corrupt⁸ because of my foolishness.

I am troubled;⁸ I am bowed down¹ greatly; I go¹⁴ mourning⁶ all the day long.

For my loins are filled¹ with a loathsome¹² [disease]: and [there is] no soundness in my flesh.

I am feeble⁸ and sore broken:⁸ I have roared¹ by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

Lord, all my desire [is] before thee; and my groaning is not hid⁸ from thee.

My heart panteth,⁴³ my strength faileth¹ me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

My lovers⁶ and my friends stand⁴ aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand¹ afar off.

They also that seek¹⁸ after my life lay snares¹⁷ [for me]: and they that seek⁶ my hurt speak¹⁴ mischievous things, and imagine⁴ deceits all the day long.

But I, as a deaf [man], heard⁴ not; and [I was] as a dumb man [that] openeth⁴ not his mouth.

Thus I was as a man that heareth⁶ not, and in whose mouth [are] no reproofs.

For in thee, O LORD, do I hope:⁵² thou wilt hear,⁴ O Lord my God.

For I said,¹ [Hear me], lest [otherwise] they should rejoice⁴ over me: when my foot slippeth,² they magnify⁵² [themselves] against me.

For I [am] ready¹² to halt, and my sorrow [is] continually before me.

For I will declare⁵⁵ mine iniquity; I will be sorry⁴ for my sin.

But mine enemies⁶ [are] lively, [and] they are strong:¹ and they that hate⁶ me wrongfully are multiplied.¹

They also that render¹⁸ evil for good are mine adversaries;⁴ because I follow² [the thing that] good [is].

Forsake⁴ me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far⁴ from me.

Make haste³ to help me, O Lord my salvation.
