2nd Kings 10 | King James Bible |
Chapter 11 | |
1 | And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw1 that her son was dead,1 she arose4 and destroyed17 all the seed royal. |
2 | But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took4 Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole4 him from among the king's sons [which were] slain;94 and they hid55 him, [even] him and his nurse,56 in the bedchamber 4296 from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.90 |
3 | And he was with her hid102 in the house of the LORD six years. And Athaliah did reign6 over the land. |
4 | And the seventh year Jehoiada sent1 and fetched4 the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard,5 and brought55 them to him into the house of the LORD, and made4 a covenant with them, and took an oath55 of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed55 them the king's son. |
5 | And he commanded17 them, saying,2 This [is] the thing that ye shall do;4 A third part of you that enter in6 on the sabbath shall even be keepers6 of the watch of the king's house; |
6 | And a third part [shall be] at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard:5 so shall ye keep1 the watch of the house, that it be not broken down. |
7 | And two parts of all you that go forth6 on the sabbath, even they shall keep1 the watch of the house of the LORD about the king. |
8 | And ye shall compass52 the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh6 within the ranges, let him be slain:93 and be ye with the king as he goeth out2 and as he cometh in.2 |
9 | And the captains over the hundreds did4 according to all [things] that Jehoiada the priest commanded:14 and they took4 every man his men that were to come in6 on the sabbath, with them that should go out6 on the sabbath, and came4 to Jehoiada the priest. |
10 | And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give4 king David's spears and shields, that [were] in the temple of the LORD. |
11 | And the guard5 stood,4 every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, [along] by the altar and the temple. |
12 | And he brought forth55 the king's son, and put4 the crown upon him, and [gave him] the testimony; and they made him king,55 and anointed4 him; and they clapped55 their hands, and said,4 God save4 the king. |
13 | And when Athaliah heard4 the noise of the guard5 [and] of the people, she came4 to the people into the temple of the LORD. |
14 | And when she looked,4 behold, the king stood6 by a pillar, as the manner [was], and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew6 with trumpets: and Athaliah rent4 her clothes, and cried,4 Treason, Treason. |
15 | But Jehoiada the priest commanded17 the captains of the hundreds, the officers7 of the host, and said4 unto them, Have her forth54 without the ranges: and him that followeth6 310 her kill53 with the sword. For the priest had said,1 Let her not be slain93 in the house of the LORD. |
16 | And they laid4 hands on her; and she went4 by the way by the which the horses came into the king's house: and there was she slain.93 |
17 | And Jehoiada made4 a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD'S people; between the king also and the people. |
18 | And all the people of the land went4 into the house of Baal, and brake it down;4 his altars and his images brake they in pieces14 thoroughly,53 and slew1 Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed4 officers7 6486 over the house of the LORD. |
19 | And he took4 the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard,5 and all the people of the land; and they brought down55 the king from the house of the LORD, and came4 by the way of the gate of the guard5 to the king's house. And he sat4 on the throne of the kings. |
20 | And all the people of the land rejoiced,4 and the city was in quiet:1 and they slew52 Athaliah with the sword [beside] the king's house. |
