Chapter 20

And God spake¹⁷ all these words, saying,²

I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out⁵² of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make⁴ unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth:

Thou shalt not bow down¹⁰¹ thyself to them, nor serve⁹³ them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting⁶ the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate⁶ me;

And shewing⁶ mercy unto thousands of them that love⁶ me, and keep⁶ my commandments.

Thou shalt not take⁴ the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless¹⁷ that taketh⁴ his name in vain.

Remember² the sabbath day, to keep it holy.¹⁵

Six days shalt thou labour,⁴ and do¹ all thy work:

But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do⁴ any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates:

For [in] six days the LORD made¹ heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested⁴ the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed¹⁴ the sabbath day, and hallowed¹⁷ it.

Honour¹⁶ thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long⁵⁵ upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth⁶ thee.

Thou shalt not kill.⁴

Thou shalt not commit adultery.⁴

Thou shalt not steal.⁴

Thou shalt not bear⁴ false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet⁴ thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet⁴ thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour's.

And all the people saw⁶ the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw⁴ [it], they removed,⁴ and stood⁴ afar off.

And they said⁴ unto Moses, Speak¹⁶ thou with us, and we will hear:⁴ but let not God speak¹⁷ with us, lest we die.⁴

And Moses said⁴ unto the people, Fear⁴ not: for God is come¹ to prove¹⁵ you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin⁴ not.

And the people stood⁴ afar off, and Moses drew near⁸ unto the thick darkness where God [was].

And the LORD said⁴ unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say⁴ unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen¹ that I have talked¹⁴ with you from heaven.

Ye shall not make⁴ with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make⁴ unto you gods of gold.

An altar of earth thou shalt make⁴ unto me, and shalt sacrifice¹ thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record⁵⁵ my name I will come⁴ unto thee, and I will bless¹⁴ thee.

And if thou wilt make⁴ me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build⁴ it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up⁵² thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted¹⁷ it.

Neither shalt thou go up⁴ by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered¹¹ thereon.
