The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 34

1

And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare1 unto Jacob, went out4 to see2 the daughters of the land.

2

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw4 her, he took4 her, and lay4 with her, and defiled her.17

3

And his soul clave4 unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved4 the damsel, and spake17 kindly unto the damsel.

4

And Shechem spake4 unto his father Hamor, saying,2 Get3 me this damsel to wife.

5

And Jacob heard1 that he had defiled14 Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace52 until they were come.2

6

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out4 unto Jacob to commune15 with him.

7

And the sons of Jacob came1 out of the field when they heard2 [it]: and the men were grieved,101 and they were very wroth,4 because he had wrought1 folly in Israel in lying2 with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.11

8

And Hamor communed17 with them, saying,2 The soul of my son Shechem longeth1 for your daughter: I pray you give3 her him to wife.

9

And make ye marriages100 with us, [and] give4 your daughters unto us, and take4 our daughters unto you.

10

And ye shall dwell4 with us: and the land shall be4 before you; dwell3 and trade1 ye therein, and get you possessions10 therein.

11

And Shechem said4 unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find4 grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say4 unto me I will give.4

12

Ask54 me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give4 according as ye shall say4 unto me: but give3 me the damsel to wife.

13

And the sons of Jacob answered4 Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said,17 because he had defiled14 Dinah their sister:

14

And they said4 unto them, We cannot 3201 4 do2 this thing, to give2 our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach unto us:

15

But in this will we consent11 unto you: If ye will be as we [be], that every male of you be circumcised;9

16

Then will we give1 our daughters unto you, and we will take4 your daughters to us, and we will dwell1 with you, and we will become one people.

17

But if ye will not hearken4 unto us, to be circumcised;9 then will we take1 our daughter, and we will be gone.1

18

And their words pleased4 5869 Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

19

And the young man deferred14 not to do2 the thing, because he had delight1 in Jacob's daughter: and he [was] more honourable12 than all the house of his father.

20

And Hamor and Shechem his son came4 unto the gate of their city, and communed17 with the men of their city, saying,2

21

These men [are] peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell4 in the land, and trade4 therein; for the land, behold, [it is] large enough for them; let us take4 their daughters to us for wives, and let us give4 them our daughters.

22

Only herein will the men consent11 unto us for to dwell2 with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised,9 as they [are] circumcised.12

23

[Shall] not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs [be] ours? only let us consent11 unto them, and they will dwell4 with us.

24

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened4 all that went out6 of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised,11 all that went out6 of the gate of his city.

25

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore,6 that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took4 each man his sword, and came4 upon the city boldly, and slew4 all the males.

26

And they slew1 Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out4 of Shechem's house, and went out.4

27

The sons of Jacob came1 upon the slain, and spoiled4 the city, because they had defiled14 their sister.

28

They took1 their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which [was] in the city, and that which [was] in the field,

29

And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive,1 and spoiled4 even all that [was] in the house.

30

And Jacob said4 to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled1 me to make me to stink53 among the inhabitants6 of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I [being] few in number, they shall gather8 themselves together against me, and slay52 me; and I shall be destroyed,8 I and my house.

31

And they said,4 Should he deal4 with our sister as with an harlot?6
